Jazz and Metal – convergence or collision course?

Interesting article about similarities between jazz and metal. Only a few days ago I listened to Mike Stern and it struck me that some of his riffs would sound quite at home in metal. Are these genres gravitating towards each other or is it just cross pollination? Metal has definitely moved towards the melodic and harmonic complexity of jazz, and for decades rock has been finding its way into jazz, too.
